Current version: 1.1.3 (2026-09-29). Bosses do not share one universal “bait charge, sidestep, shoot the stun” solution. What they share is a second white bar below health: it is the escape timer. If it empties, the encounter ends and you must trigger the boss again.

Every official change that affects a boss fight

This is the part most guides get wrong, because the fights have been rebalanced repeatedly. All of it comes from Dazed Games’ own notes.

PatchDateEffect on bosses
1.0.42026-08-2xOfficially nerfed Pufferfish and the Whale
1.0.92026-08-24Difficulty is now changeable in the main menu and in-game: Easy = all creatures 25% less health and 50% less damage; Hard = 25% more health and 25% more damage. That applies to bosses too, so an Easy boss has three-quarters of its health
1.0.102026-08-27Anglerfish nerfed (“too annoying with a lot of health”)
1.0.112026-09-01You now die from your own explosives even with friendly fire disabled — dynamite is no longer a safe boss opener; items must have been held once before they can be sold, so a dropped trophy cannot vanish into a sale
1.0.122026-09-04Piranha rebalanced, Tuna nerfed, and the final boss now takes damage from explosives even when landing on its tail
1.1.02026-09-28Islet Update: a new mini-boss and more creatures. The patch note does not name them
1.1.22026-09-29Fixed the new mini-boss’s triangles facing the wrong direction

Because 1.0.9 lets you change difficulty mid-save, a fight that feels impossible is now a settings problem before it is a skill problem.

Spider Crab: first boss

  • Trigger: Empty Beer Can at the Lighthouse.
  • Fight: Bait the direct charge, move laterally, then shoot during the crash/stun recovery. This is the boss where the charge-and-stun advice is directly useful.
  • Progression: Return the requested proof to the Lighthouse Keeper, take the boat key, then buy the separate $10 Radar.

Giant Piranha

  • Trigger: Modified Leech received for collecting 3/3 ground leeches on Island 2.
  • Fight: Keep a wide lateral route. Kill only small piranhas blocking movement; clearing every add wastes the escape timer. 1.0.12 rebalanced this fight, so a launch-week video may show different health or add pressure.
  • Progression: Return the distinct Giant Piranha skeleton. Beginner Boss Lure summons The Old Pike and does not replace this quest bait.

Pufferfish

  • Trigger: Carrot returned through the tourist/endangered-fish request.
  • Fight: It charges fast and turns badly. Circle trees and the merchant hut, fire when it overshoots a turn, and never stand still — most wipes are three seconds of standing. It grows as you hit it and is easiest to dodge around half health. In the second half it leaves purple poison that ticks hard; widen your loop instead of crossing poisoned ground. It has been nerfed since launch, so if it feels harsher than a current video, you are probably watching pre-1.0.4 footage.
  • Progression: Preserve and return the fin.

Albatross

  • Trigger: Save about $1,200 for the Professional Boss Lure, defeat Tuna with it, and leave the Tuna body intact as the bird bait.
  • Fight: Albatross stays airborne, dives at you and fires downward, so the Sniper Rifle is the cleanest answer. Tuck behind the merchant hut or under an eave, then snipe it when it pulls away. Do not apply Spider Crab’s ground-charge timing here.
  • Progression: Return the Albatross head to unlock the Volcano route.

Bowhead Whale

  • Trigger: Fish Bucket from the scientist on Island 5.
  • Fight: It slams down on the island after splashing, so run sideways the moment it jumps. Bring endgame damage and healing, and watch the escape bar. Officially nerfed in 1.0.4.
  • Progression: Keep the entire body; it is the next boss trigger, not ordinary sale loot.

Mutated Bowhead Whale: final boss

  • Trigger: Throw the Bowhead Whale body into the volcano.
  • Fight: Move away from each lava landing/contact zone and keep damage up between impacts. Two patch notes matter here: the whale was nerfed in 1.0.4, and 1.0.12 made it take explosive damage even while landing on its tail — before that fix, a tail-first landing could eat your explosive for nothing.
  • Progression: Return the final fin, then use the military boat/RHIB route to the mainland.

The 1.1.0 mini-boss

The Islet Update added a new mini-boss and more creatures, stacked on multiple mini-islands that show up as dots on the radar (enlarged in 1.1.2). The official patch note does not name the mini-boss or the creatures, so this page does not invent names.

Two things are on the record and worth acting on:

  • 1.1.2 fixed triangles facing the wrong direction on it, which is a visual bug fix — if you fought it in the first two days, the fight looked worse than it is.
  • Community footage names it the Manta Ray boss and describes a new currency and mini-game alongside it. That is a creator description, not an official name, so treat it as a label for finding videos rather than a confirmed name in-game.

Boss achievements worth reading before you fight

From the official Steam achievement list (31 achievements, read 2026-09-30), four interact directly with boss fights:

  • Easy — kill a boss within 10 seconds.
  • Competitive eating — eat a mini-boss.
  • Handyman — defeat the final boss with your bare hands.
  • Deadliest catch — help the military defeat the big creature they located.

Why the boss left or the island stayed locked

If the boss leaves with health remaining, the white escape bar expired. If the boss died but the island stayed locked, check the named body/trophy and correct receiving NPC — and remember that since 1.0.11 an item must have been held once before it can be sold. In co-op, pick one trophy carrier before casting and verify the host sees the quest update.
