Beating the First How to Fish Boss: the Spider Crab, Step by Step
Do not drink the beer. Trade it for an empty can, fish the Spider Crab out of the water, dodge the charge and hit it while it is dizzy to earn the boat keys.

Getting stuck on the first boss is normal, because it exists to teach you one thing: stop standing still. The Spider Crab blocks the only way off the starting island, and the Lighthouse Keeper is holding the boat keys until someone deals with the long-legged thing stealing his beer.
One funny detail: Daz and Will started their Off The Hook session halfway through the campaign and never showed this fight, so here it is, filled in.
Step 1: get the empty beer can
Grind a little cash with the basic rod and the free lure, then buy the $12 beer. Do not drink it. If you do, the quest bait never lands in your inventory and you have just burned twelve dollars.
Hand the full bottle to the Lighthouse Keeper. He drinks it and hands back the Empty Beer Can, the only bait that summons the Spider Crab.
Step 2: buy the right stuff
- The $45 knife beats the $24 brass knuckles. Solo, you will not finish this boss with knuckles. The extra cash buys you margin for mistakes.
- Sharpen the knife for $14 at the anvil by the door.
- Carry something edible. Heal after you make space, not while the crab is winding up.
Top up health and hunger before you cast, or you will not survive long enough to punish the openings.
Step 3: bait the charge, punish the stun
Trading hits gets you killed. The whole loop is three beats:
- Keep just enough distance that the crab commits to a charge.
- Step to the side as it comes, so it whiffs.
- It stands there dizzy with stars spinning over its head. Run in, land two or three hits, then back off before the stars fade.
Repeat until the bar is empty. Watch the thin white bar under its health — that is the escape timer. Run it out and the boss vanishes, so you need another beer and another can. Hit every safe window, but never stand still for one extra swing.
Step 4: if you keep wiping
- You are standing still and trading hits. That is the usual cause. The stun comes from a missed charge, not from your attacks.
- The can is not equipped. Buying or drinking the beer does nothing on its own. Equip the empty can as bait and cast from the dock.
- You bought the knuckles. Skip them solo and go straight for the knife.
Hand the body to the Lighthouse Keeper, take the keys and move on. Later fights live in the boss guide, and the island order is on the island progression page.
